Short Description | The HIRO FMDCs guarantee low-to-no processing latency; improved resiliency (no network loss) and security; cost savings (due to incremental deployment and composability) and scalability support. |
Require | FMDC will require information from the different components at the edge. |
Provide | FMDC collaborates with other EMDC’s (East-West), 5G/6G and distant Cloud (North-South) to provide optimal performance. |
Input | Kubernetes deployable manifest and information from other components to be stored in DKB. |
Output | The application is deployed at the fog layer with close proximity to edge, so it will provide faster data exchange with minimal latency. |

General description
An FMDC is a modular easy scalable data center, small enclosures (1.8kW) up to shipping containers (500kW) with integrated power and cooling. Current features:
- Software: Edge services stack to support Big Data processing and AI applications
- Hardware: Industry standard, disaggregated, heterogenous, hyper converged servers. High performing, energy efficient PUE 1.03 and renewable compatible.
- Intelligence: operates fully autonomous, and its intelligence manages the collaboration with other EMDC’s (East-West), 5G/6G and distant Cloud (North-South).
- Reconfigurable: Hardware and software components can be dynamically adjusted/restructured to meet changing computational demands or specific application requirements.
- Performance: optimal performance resilience and efficiency mirroring living systems ability to be self-sustaining.
MYRTUS Extension/Contribution
FMDC will be extended to:
- follow edge-as-a-service principles with autonomy at the edge and federation across the fog and cloud;
- provide the implementation of a hardware root of trust by utilizing the existing features of the FMDC.
Plans and Expectation
Assessment Plan@M18:
FMDC in the fog layer will be responsible for communication between cloud and edge layer. It will primarily respond to data flows and take action on the data based on their relevance and prioritization in the edge layer. On top of that it will timely feed information and insights from the fog and cloud applications to the edge devices. The assessment at M18 will focus on:
- Resource management at FMDC i.e demonstration of the workload deployment inside FMDC using information exchange with MIRTO agent via common Interface.
Monitoring and observability capabilities for FMDC using Prometheus.
Expected Results@M18:
- Demonstration of successful WL placement at FMDC via MIRTO agent in the context of the UC scenarios.
- Demonstration of successful integration of the tools for Monitoring & Observability to measure FMDC’s metrics (e.g. CPU, memory utilization, etc.) and workload deployed at FMDC.
